SMS Team Recognized for Key Contributions to Success of the Pentagon’s Command Communications Survivability Project

McLean, VA | January 12, 2006 – SMS, a leading IT services provider and systems integration firm with nearly 40 years of experience providing IT solutions to the Federal Government, was recently honored upon the completion of the successful Command Communications Survivability Program (CCSP) at the Pentagon. SMS’s contributions were highlighted at the CCSP wrap-up ceremony by EDS Program Manager Ernie Williard, who cited the technical expertise and work ethic of the SMS team as key factors in the outstanding success enjoyed by CCSP.

SMS engineers served in many key roles on the CCSP team, including Network Architect, Security Lead, Lead Engineer and Project Manager. Key Pentagon firewalls and security infrastructures were converted to the CCSP backbone by the SMS team. SMS engineers also led the installation of the Pentagon’s classified networks on the CCCP backbone and the conversion of Pentagon circuits to the new infrastructure.

Mr. Juan Hernandez, President and COO of SMS, said of the CCSP team, “During our 30 years in the IT industry, our customers and partners have come to depend on SMS’s expertise and reliability. Throughout the CCSP project, our engineers have proven time and again that they have the dedication and knowledge to solve problems and get the job done.”

Mr. Mike Nicholas, SMS’s Project Lead for CCSP, added, “The power of an effective team was evident in our work on the CCSP project. Our engineers consistently pulled together and worked overtime to tackle all issues – expected and unexpected – that came up over the duration of the project.”

The CCSP program lasted approximately two years, ensuring survivability, reliability, manageability, security, flexibility and availability of the Pentagon Information Technology Infrastructure. As subcontractors to both EDS and Verizon, SMS Engineers formed the bulk of the CCSP Network Team, contributing over 40 engineers and program managers to the effort.

The dedication demonstrated by the SMS engineering team set the standard for excellence within CCSP. Highlighted by more than 600 Authorized Outages in an 18-month period, their efforts through many long nights and weekends will remain part of the distinguished history of accomplishments of the Pentagon Renovation Program.
