Why Work At SMS

Technical Leadership Program (TLP)

At SMS, we believe that technical leadership is at the heart of our success and our ability to deliver innovative solutions for our customers. That’s why we created the Technical Leadership Program (TLP), a company-wide initiative designed to recognize, develop, and reward our top technical talent.

What is the TLP?

The TLP identifies and supports SMS’ technical Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and leaders whose contributions go beyond their routine responsibilities. Through the TLP, participants engage in cross-team collaboration, pursue advanced training, and drive technical innovation that delivers measurable impact for SMS and our customers.

Key Goals of the TLP

  • Build a culture of technical leadership that extends to all employees.
  • Enable the exchange of knowledge and ideas between teams and programs.
  • Upskill technical staff to advance service delivery and create a competitive advantage.
  • Produce demonstrable work for business development and marketing.
  • Support leadership with improved retention, evaluation, and recognition tools.

How It Works

After TLP participants are selected through an annual application process, they set performance goals, collaborate on technical initiatives, complete advanced training, and share their expertise across the organization. All employees are encouraged to engage with the TLP community—whether as formal participants or through the open Tech Club, which welcomes anyone interested in sharing knowledge and learning from peers.

The TLP is central to SMS’ commitment to professional growth, technical excellence, and a collaborative, forward-thinking culture. By investing in our technical leaders, we ensure SMS remains a great place to work and a trusted partner for our customers.

SMS Gives

Headquartered outside of Washington DC, SMS works in many diverse locations nationwide and believes in positively impacting these communities. We support local DC charities, including the Salvation Army of Loudon County, and organize company-wide events such as our Annual Fitness Challenge as platforms for charitable giving. Examples of charities we have recently supported include the St. Ann’s Home & School in Methuen, Massachusetts, and the Montgomery Area Food Bank in Montgomery, Alabama.

SMS is proud to give back to the communities where we live and work, and to support our employees in doing the same. Additionally, our SMS recognition platform allows employees to donate their bonuses to over 25 charities such as the American Cancer Society, American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanities, National Park Foundation, and more.

Montgomery Food Bank
Aaron Graffius and Robert Nicholson donate to Montgomery Area Food Bank for the third consecutive year, helping provide nourishment to the hungry in a service area of over 25,000 square miles.
