SMS Appraised at CMMI Level 3 for Development and CMMI Level 2 for Services

McLean, VA | June 6, 2012 – SMS, a leading IT services provider and systems integration firm with nearly 40 years of experience providing IT solutions to the Federal Government, today announced that it has been appraised at Level 3 for Development and Level 2 for Services of the Carnegie Mellon University Software Engineering Institute’s Capability Maturity Model Integration(CMMI). The appraisal was performed by an independent lead appraiser, certified by the SEI, from Cyber Solutions, Inc.

CMMI, the measure of excellence in improving organizational processes in government and industry, is a framework of best practices that guide an organization to improve quality and reduce costs by using reliable and repeatable processes. Specifically at SMS, being assessed as a CMMI-DEV L3 and CMMI-SVC L2 organization means that SMS has demonstrated its implementation of these “best practices” which directly link management and technology initiatives to business objectives. With reliable, well-defined and continuous improvement processes, SMS will reduce costs, lower risk, and improve product quality and timeliness of delivery for technology solutions delivered to our customers.

CMMI Level 3 for Development

CMMI for Development (CMMI-DEV) provides a comprehensive integrated set of guidelines for developing products and services. An appraisal at maturity level 3 indicates that SMS is performing at a “defined” level. At this level, processes are well characterized and understood, and are described in standards, procedures, tools, and methods. SMS’ set of standard processes, which is the basis for maturity level 3, is established and improved over time. SMS has held its level 3 certification in good standing since July of 2009.”

CMMI Level 2 for Services

CMMI for Services (CMMI-SVC) provides a comprehensive integrated set of guidelines for providing superior services. An appraisal at maturity level 2 indicates that SMS is performing at a “managed” level. At this level, projects have ensured that processes are planned and executed in accordance with policy; the projects employ skilled people who have adequate resources to produce controlled outputs; involve relevant stakeholders; are monitored, controlled, and reviewed; and are evaluated for adherence. ”Adding CMMI-SVC L2 to our collection of best practices, which include CMMI-DEV L3 and ISO 9001:2008 distinguishes and differentiates us from the competition,” said Juan Hernandez, President of SMS. “It signals to our customers and the industry just how seriously we take our quality process improvement initiatives,” added Mr. Hernandez.
