SMS Company Highlights

Celebrating John Ladd’s Nearly 30 Years at SMS

After nearly three decades of leadership, we are proud to celebrate the remarkable career of John Ladd as John retires from SMS.

John’s SMS story began at the Pentagon — before he ever joined the company. As a Government engineer in the Pentagon Renovation Office, John authored the “Backbone Architecture” that helped unify disparate networks into a single common infrastructure, and he led IT Product Team engineering efforts for the 12-year, $1.4 billion renovation effort.

John joined SMS in 1999 and quickly became one of the company’s most trusted builders — of systems, of teams, and of the operational discipline that would underpin SMS’ long-term success. In 2001, he led the IT recovery effort that reconstituted 2,200 displaced Pentagon workers after 9/11 — restoring full network connectivity across multiple emergency relocation sites in five days.

Over the decades that followed, John became central to many of SMS’ most significant programs and growth milestones. He created what we know today as Service Delivery at SMS — the processes, standards, and people that enable consistent execution across the contracts we run. He also developed the language that bridged engineering and corporate operations — turning technical excellence into repeatable delivery, and delivery into customer trust.

In 2007, John was promoted to VP of Technical Operations and Engineering, where he drove the development of the Pentagon’s IT Master Plan — a long-range roadmap for IT services, policies, and funding that continues to shape the building today. In 2014, he became SMS’ Chief Operating Officer, leading SMS’ Service Delivery and Quality Assurance.

As COO, John was a steady force behind major capture, solutioning, and execution for critical wins across the last decade — including Air Force programs such as C4 Kirtland, Cyber Support Services 2(CSS2), and the AFRL PRsISM task order — helping deliver some of SMS’ largest ever awards.

Through the decades John has led with an engineer’s mindset and an operator’s calm: no drama, no ego, and a relentless focus on doing the right thing for customers and teammates. He has been the kind of leader who shows up every day for the people doing the work — ensuring teams have what they need, holding a high bar, and mentoring others to deliver with confidence. Thank you, John. We wish you a happy and healthy retirement!
